Therapy Didn’t “Work” Before?
Choosing the Right Type of Therapy Based on Your Needs and Goals
Therapy isn’t about picking a “right” or “wrong” method — it’s about matching the work to what you’re actually trying to learn or navigate, change, understand, or heal. Most people move between different modes of therapy over time, depending on what life is asking of them. Here’s how you can think about which approach fits where you need it to- or blend them together.
🔗 Case Management — When you need coordination, advocacy, and support navigating complex needs
Case Management is the structured, relational, and strategic process of helping you navigate complex needs by coordinating services, advocating for resources, and ensuring continuity of care. It’s about making sure the practical pieces of your life and treatment plan actually work together.
Choose case management when you need:
Help connecting to community resources or support programs
Coordination between providers, agencies, or services
Advocacy for housing, financial, medical, or social needs
Support managing multiple systems (legal, medical, educational, etc.)
A partner who helps you stay organized and supported across your care
Case management is the stability phase — making sure the real‑world logistics support your healing.
🗣️ Talk Therapy — When you need clarity, understanding, and a place to think out loud
Talk therapy is best when your primary goal is understanding yourself, your patterns, and your experiences. It’s conversational, reflective, and grounded in exploring what’s happening in your life and why.
Choose talk therapy when you want to:
Make sense of confusing emotions or reactions
Understand long‑standing patterns in relationships or behavior
Explore identity, values, or direction
Work through decisions or transitions
Build insight before taking action
Talk therapy creates the foundation: awareness, language, and perspective. It’s the “figuring out” phase.
🛠️ Skill Building Therapy — When you need tools, structure, and practical change
Skill building therapy focuses on learning and practicing concrete strategies to handle emotions, situations, and relationships more effectively. It’s active, structured, and aimed at helping you do something differently.
Choose skill building therapy when you want to:
Manage anxiety, overwhelm, or emotional intensity
Improve communication or boundary‑setting
Build coping skills for stress, conflict, or triggers
Strengthen routines, habits, or self‑discipline
Feel more capable and equipped day‑to‑day
Skill building therapy is the “doing” phase: learning tools that make life more manageable and predictable.
🌿 Processing Therapy — When you need healing, release, and integration
Processing therapy is for working through difficult experiences or emotions so they can be understood, accepted, and carried differently. It’s deeper, slower, and focused on healing rather than problem‑solving.
Choose processing therapy when you want to:
Work through trauma, grief, or painful memories
Release emotions you’ve been holding for years
Understand how past experiences shape your present
Move from survival mode into healing
Carry your story with less weight and more compassion
Processing therapy is the “healing” phase: transforming what hurts so you can move forward differently.
How to Decide What You Need
Most people benefit from a blend of these approaches over time. A simple way to choose is to ask:
Do I need support navigating systems? → Case Management
Do I need clarity? → Talk Therapy
Do I need tools? → Skill Building Therapy
Do I need healing? → Processing Therapy
Different seasons of life call for different kinds of work.
Therapeutic Modalities I utilize based on your goals:
Case Management is the structured, relational, and strategic process of helping a client navigate complex needs by coordinating services, advocating for resources, and ensuring continuity of care.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a brief, structured psychotherapy approach designed primarily to help people reduce the emotional distress associated with traumatic or highly distressing memories. ART combines elements of several therapeutic techniques, including exposure, imagery, cognitive restructuring, and guided eye movements.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) — helps people accept difficult internal experiences while taking action based on their values.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) — builds skills in emotion regulation, distress tolerance, self-awareness, and communication.
Humanistic / Person-Centered Therapy — emphasizes empathy, authenticity, acceptance, and your capacity for growth.
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, person-centered psychotherapy approach designed to help you strengthen your motivation and commitment to change.
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) — concentrates on goals, strengths, exceptions to problems, and practical solutions rather than extensively analyzing the origins of difficulties.
Strengths-Based Therapy is a person-centered therapeutic approach that focuses on identifying, developing, and building upon a client's existing strengths, abilities, resources, resilience, and sources of support, rather than concentrating primarily on problems or deficits.
“It is what it is; but, it will become what you make it! ”
Vision & Purpose
My vision is to cultivate a community where people feel grounded, supported, and more confident in their ability to grow.
Through individual therapy and consulting with programs and organizations, Wildwood offers a warm, honest, and welcoming space to do the real work of healing and growth.
I believe growth is rarely neat or linear, and none of us have to have it all figured out. We can hold space for what has been, take responsibility for where we are now, and build practical skills for where we want to go next.
Wildwood’s purpose is to make healing and growth feel accessible, meaningful, and human—where progress is celebrated, challenges are met with compassion and accountability, and your past can be a guide, not an anchor!
